Rim Fire pushes deeper into Yosemite, threatens Bay Area water source
COMMENT: Thanks to @insidebayarea for this illustrative graphic of the massive Rim Fire currently affecting Yosemite National Park. San Francisco city and county (231.89 sq mi, pop. 825,111) heavily depends on the Hetch Hetchy water supply, as well as other Bay Area locations to varying degrees. This is a case study lesson for urban planners. When a major city has to depend heavily on a water supply hundreds of miles away, and in a vulnerable natural disaster location, that city is asking for trouble down the line. San Francisco leadership may be wise to consider alternative sources of water (desalination???) in light of this looming disaster.
